The brief
- FedEx joined the governing council in February 2026 and will run a node with an equal vote.
- Fees are fixed in US dollars: a basic HBAR transfer costs $0.0001, paid in HBAR at the live rate.
- The network passed 10 million accounts in September 2026; its whole codebase is open source as Hiero.
Technical approach
Hashgraph instead of blocks
Nodes gossip transactions plus who-told-whom. From that shared history every node computes the same order, with no block races or wasted work.
A council of companies runs the nodes
Council members get equal votes, serve limited terms and each run a node. Only members run consensus nodes today, a trade of openness for accountability.
Prices set in dollars
Each operation has a fixed USD price, converted to HBAR at the live exchange rate, so businesses can budget costs even when the token price swings.
Code handed to the Linux Foundation
In 2024 the full codebase, including the consensus algorithm, went to LF Decentralized Trust as the Hiero project, so no single firm owns the software.
