The brief
- Antora's thermal batteries store cheap electricity as heat in carbon blocks, usable for industrial heat or power generation.
- The company commissioned a 5 GWh system at POET's bioethanol facility in May 2026, the largest thermal storage project worldwide.
- Series C funding of $550M (July 2026, $2.47B valuation) will expand production and establish a second U.S. facility.
Technical approach
Heat in solid carbon blocks
Electricity converts to heat in insulated carbon blocks at 500-700°C. Heat can power industrial equipment directly or generate electricity.
Multi-day discharge without degradation
The system discharges over hours or days to match industrial or grid demand patterns without self-discharge losses.
Modular 50 MWh units
Each thermal battery module is 50 MWh. Projects build from multiples of this module, scaling gigawatts without redesign.
Lower capex than long-duration batteries
Carbon blocks and simple mechanics cost less than advanced chemistry, reducing capital cost per MWh.
