Tesla tells investors Optimus Gen 3 design is final and outside sales could start as early as 2027

TeslaOptimus

After a visit to Tesla's Fremont factory, JPMorgan analyst Rajat Gupta reported that Tesla said the Optimus Gen 3 humanoid robot design is final, its supply chain essentially locked in, and sales to outside buyers could begin as early as the second half of 2027. Electrek noted that these are company claims, not results: the Gen 3 reveal was repeatedly delayed and Musk has admitted no Optimus robots do useful work at Tesla yet.

  • The Optimus line is going into the old Model S/X building in Fremont, which Tesla says will eventually reach 1 million robots a year; a planned Texas line targets 10 million.
  • Tesla also told JPMorgan that FSD v15 is a 'step-change' and that about 40% of it already runs in the Austin robotaxi fleet.
  • Tesla says its current HW4 car computer is enough for unsupervised driving, while it rolls out AI4.5 with about 10% more compute and double the memory.
  • Caveat: Tesla earlier claimed it would deploy about 5,000 Optimus units, and earlier promised HW3 cars could drive unsupervised; those cars now get a reduced 'Lite' software version.
