CFS says more than half of the HTS 'pancake' coils for SPARC's magnets are built
Commonwealth Fusion SystemsSPARC
Commonwealth Fusion Systems said it has built more than half of the high-temperature superconducting (HTS) pancake coils that stack to form SPARC's D-shaped toroidal field magnets and circular poloidal field magnets. Completed pancake stacks are inserted into split steel cases and welded shut by robots; magnet production has been the main pacing item for tokamak assembly.
- Over 50% of HTS pancake coils built; coils wound from high-temperature superconducting tape.
- Toroidal field magnets are D-shaped with steady current; poloidal field use pulsed current.
- Completed pancake stacks placed in split steel cases and robotic-welded shut.
- Magnet production has been the critical path item for SPARC assembly.
