CFS and MIT announce a large-bore HTS magnet reached a 20 tesla field
Commonwealth Fusion SystemsSPARC
CFS and MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center demonstrated a large-bore high-temperature superconducting magnet sustained above 20 tesla, proving the technology that enables SPARC to be far smaller than earlier tokamaks of similar power.
- Sustained field of >20 tesla using commercially available HTS magnets, enabling compact reactor design.
- Stronger magnetic fields allow smaller, more cost-effective fusion reactors versus traditional designs requiring enormous scale.
- SPARC, under construction in Massachusetts, is on track to demonstrate net energy from fusion by 2025.
