Current obstacles

Federal political riskTwo stop-work orders in 2025 halted work until courts stepped in. Ørsted said the halt cost over $1.4M a day.
Finishing commissioningAll turbines are up, but each must be tested and brought online before the farm reaches full output.

Physics limits

Wind power rises with the cube of wind speedDouble the wind speed and a turbine makes eight times the power, so output swings sharply with the weather and calm spells produce almost nothing.
No turbine can capture all the wind's energyIf a rotor stopped the air completely, no new air could flow through. Physics caps capture at about 59% of the wind's energy (the Betz limit); real turbines get roughly 45-50%.
Wakes steal wind from neighboursEach turbine leaves a slower, churned wake behind it. Turbines must be spaced far apart, and big farms still lose a noticeable share of output to wakes.

Turbines

Direct-drive 11 MW turbines

Each 200 m rotor turns a generator directly, with no gearbox. Fewer moving parts means less to fail far out at sea.

Foundations

Steel monopiles

Each turbine stands on a single wide steel tube driven deep into the seabed, the standard base for water of this depth.

Grid link

Two offshore substations

Cables between turbines feed two offshore substations that raise the voltage; export cables carry the power ashore at Quonset Point, Rhode Island.
