QuantumScape Announces QS PowerBlock for AI Data Center Energy Storage
QuantumScape unveiled QS PowerBlock, a modular energy storage system built on solid-state lithium-metal batteries designed for AI data centers operating at 800VDC. In prototype testing against industry benchmarks, the system achieved 4x power density and 5x longer runtime compared to conventional lithium-ion storage while maintaining thermal stability above 300°C, far exceeding the approximately 180°C thermal runaway point of standard cells. The company also joined the Open Compute Project and will display the PowerBlock at the OCP Global Summit in San Jose this month.
- QS PowerBlock uses QuantumScape's solid-state batteries in a modular rack format compatible with industry-standard power configurations for next-generation data centers.
- Testing showed 4x higher power density and 5x longer runtime than OCP Open Rack V3 benchmarks, allowing higher power densities in compact designs.
- Thermal stability exceeds 300°C compared to conventional cells which enter thermal runaway at roughly 180°C, reducing fire risk in high-power environments.
- QuantumScape joined the Open Compute Project as a member, signaling the company's commitment to the rack specifications driving AI infrastructure.
- The PowerBlock targets the rapidly growing demand for power-hungry AI systems and the industry shift to 800VDC architectures in data centers.
