Neuralink discloses thread retraction in first participant, reducing effective electrodes

NeuralinkN1 implant (Telepathy)

Neuralink disclosed that weeks after Noland Arbaugh's N1 implant surgery, a number of electrode threads retracted from his brain tissue, reducing the effective electrode count and initially degrading his cursor control speed. Through algorithmic changes, signal processing improvements and interface refinements, the company restored performance beyond his initial post-implant levels.

  • First participant: approximately 85% of threads retracted post-implant, reducing from 64 working electrodes to 9–10 functional units.
  • Software compensation: Neuralink adjusted recording algorithm, signal decoding, and user interface to compensate for thread loss; achieved performance improvements beyond initial baseline.
  • Neuralink knew from animal tests that retraction was possible but deemed risk low enough to not require redesign pre-approval; subsequently implemented hardware fix (8mm depth) for future implants.
