IonQ launches Superion, its electronically controlled trapped-ion line; 256-qubit deliveries begin in 2027

IonQTempo and 2D-chip roadmap

IonQ launched Superion, its sixth-generation platform, which controls trapped-ion qubits with electronics built into the chip instead of large laser systems. That lets the chips be made with standard semiconductor processes, at IonQ's SkyWater fab. The first model, Superion 256, fits a standard server rack and is due to ship to customers in 2027; a 10,000-qubit version is in development.

  • IonQ cites 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity (shown October 2025) and breakeven error correction with qLDPC codes in August 2026.
  • Six chip tapeouts were completed in the first half of 2026, and the design cycle shrank from nine months to two.
  • Superion 256 uses less power than a GPU rack and works with typical data-center cooling.
  • IonQ targets full fault tolerance in the lab in 2027 and manufacturable fault tolerance in 2028; these are goals, not results.
