IonQ agrees to acquire Oxford Ionics for about $1.08B

IonQ agreed to buy UK-based Oxford Ionics for $1.075 billion, almost all in IonQ stock plus $10 million cash. Oxford Ionics controls trapped-ion qubits electronically on standard semiconductor chips and holds fidelity records, which IonQ plans to use to scale its systems.

  • Oxford Ionics holds world records in single-qubit, two-qubit gate fidelity and quantum state preparation/measurement (SPAM).
  • Combined roadmap: 256 physical qubits at 99.99% accuracy by 2026; over 10,000 at 99.99999% logical accuracy by 2027; 2M by 2030.
  • Share count: 21.1M–35.2M IonQ shares (7.02–11.46% post-closing).
