IonQ completes its acquisition of SkyWater Technology

IonQTempo and 2D-chip roadmap

IonQ completed its purchase of SkyWater Technology, a US chip foundry, after receiving the required approvals. SkyWater becomes a wholly owned subsidiary that keeps its name and continues to serve outside customers, while giving IonQ its own fabrication for quantum chips and a domestic supply chain.

  • SkyWater shareholders received $15.00 in cash plus 0.4883 IonQ shares per share.
  • SkyWater runs fabs in Minnesota, Florida and Texas; CEO Thomas Sonderman stays on and reports to IonQ CEO Niccolo de Masi.
  • IonQ's trapped-ion roadmap depends on moving qubit control onto chips, which is why owning a fab matters.
