CFS to lead a DOE Genesis Mission project building an AI digital twin of its SPARC fusion machine
The US Department of Energy selected Commonwealth Fusion Systems to lead a Phase II project under its Genesis Mission AI-for-science initiative, announced October 8, 2026. The project will build an AI-enabled digital twin of SPARC, CFS's prototype fusion machine in Devens, Massachusetts, to help plan plasma pulses and make decisions from experimental data.
- CFS is the only private company leading a Phase II award and the only fusion project among the Phase II selections, per the announcement.
- Planned work: software to connect to DOE computing, AI surrogate models trained on fusion data, and an AI co-pilot for SPARC operations.
- Ten partners: Lawrence Livermore, Oak Ridge, PPPL, SLAC, Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Google DeepMind, NVIDIA, Synopsys and General Atomics.
- No award amount for this project is given (DOE published $159 million across 12 Phase II projects), and the timeline is described only as multiyear.
