X-energy and SGL Carbon expand capacity for nuclear-grade graphite for the Xe-100

X-energyXe-100 at Long Mott (Dow Seadrift)

X-energy will pay SGL Carbon up to $8 million in milestone payments to double European production of NBG-18 nuclear graphite by 2030 at SGL's plant in Chedde, France, with machining into blocks at SGL sites in the US. The graphite slows neutrons and forms the structure of the Xe-100's pebble-bed core, so it is a potential bottleneck for building many reactors.

  • The expansion would supply graphite for up to 8 new Xe-100 reactors a year.
  • It builds on a 10-year supplier agreement from January 2026, whose first three-year award was valued at over $100 million.
  • The first NBG-18 billets have already shipped from France to the US for machining.
  • Payments are tied to milestones, so the full $8M flows only if the capacity is actually built.
