X-energy and Centrus sign a HALEU supply agreement for Xe-100 reactors

X-energyXe-100 at Long Mott (Dow Seadrift)

X-energy signed a definitive agreement with Centrus Energy to enrich uranium, including high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) at about 15.5% uranium-235, at Centrus's American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio. The fuel goes to X-energy's TRISO-X fuel plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. HALEU is scarce outside Russia, so a domestic source matters for the Xe-100.

  • Ordinary reactor fuel is enriched to under 5%; HALEU's higher enrichment lets smaller reactors run longer on the same core.
  • Supply scales in phases with X-energy's commercial pipeline, which it puts at 11.5 GW; customers include Dow, Amazon and Centrica.
  • The agreement covers a portion of the initial Xe-100 projects, not all of them.
  • HALEU for the first project, with Dow in Texas, is already secured through DOE's HALEU Availability Program.
