Tesla holds its Cybercab launch event and begins Cybercab rollout in Austin
Tesla held a launch event in Austin on 3 September for the Cybercab, its two-seat robotaxi with no steering wheel or pedals, and the car became hailable through the Robotaxi app. Texas motor-vehicle records showed 45 Cybercabs authorized for driverless operation, part of roughly 160 Tesla autonomous vehicles in Austin.
- For scale: about 300 Waymo vehicles operate in Austin, versus Tesla's roughly 160.
- Tesla drives with cameras only; a local attorney interviewed said the rest of the industry does not generally consider that an acceptable method.
- Tesla's Austin crash record looks low so far, but an auto analyst noted that may reflect the small number of miles driven.
- Pricing and the service area for Cybercab rides were not reported.
