TerraPower breaks ground on non-nuclear construction at Kemmerer

TerraPowerNatrium (Kemmerer Unit 1)

TerraPower broke ground on the Natrium plant at Kemmerer, Wyoming on 10 June 2024, beginning non-nuclear construction with nuclear construction to follow NRC construction permit approval. The Natrium plant pairs a 345 MW sodium-cooled fast reactor with molten-salt energy storage that boosts output to 500 MW during peak demand, supporting integration with renewable resources.

  • Non-nuclear construction began 10 June 2024; nuclear construction awaits NRC approval.
  • Natrium design: 345 MWe sodium-cooled fast reactor + molten-salt storage.
  • With storage, can boost output to 500 MW during peak demand.
  • NRC application accepted; application review underway.
