Bechtel exits as lead contractor at Kemmerer; TerraPower will rebid the EPC contract and says the schedule holds
TerraPowerNatrium (Kemmerer Unit 1)
Bechtel is leaving as lead engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor at TerraPower's Natrium plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming, after the two could not agree on terms for the next phase. TerraPower will rebid the contract, gave no timeline for doing so, and says construction will keep its current schedule, with completion expected around 2030.
- Bechtel stays on site to finish the Sodium Test and Fill Facility.
- Bechtel filed a notice on September 15 that about 200 workers could be laid off or reassigned from November, though it says it expects no actual layoffs.
- The plant got NRC approval in March 2025 and construction began in April; the project is expected to employ about 1,600 workers.
- Changing the main contractor mid-project is a schedule risk on a first-of-a-kind reactor, even if TerraPower says the timeline holds.
