Southern Company and TerraPower finish the Integrated Effects Test, the nuclear sector's largest chloride-salt loop

TerraPowerMolten Chloride Fast Reactor

Southern Company and TerraPower completed the Integrated Effects Test in Everett, Washington, the world's largest chloride-salt system for the nuclear sector. The non-nuclear test facility validates thermal hydraulics and safety codes for the Molten Chloride Fast Reactor technology.

  • Integrated Effects Test (IET) in Everett, Washington; world's largest chloride-salt system for nuclear applications
  • Non-nuclear, electrically heated multi-loop facility tests how molten salt flows and transfers heat at scale
  • Supports development of ~180 MW MCFR demonstration planned for early 2030s; $76M investment with 60-40 public-private cost share
