Redwood introduces the Redwood Battery Bin for safer collection and shipping of used batteries
Redwood MaterialsRecycling and materials campus
Redwood launched the Battery Bin, a patented public drop-off system that safely collects mixed batteries and devices up to 300 Wh without requiring sorting or taping, using infrared and ultrasonic sensors to monitor conditions. The ADA-compliant, locked bins are deploying across the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern Nevada, with San Francisco regulators approving them as fire-safe.
- Users deposit batteries without preparation; the bin uses infrared, ultrasonic and positional sensing to monitor items and maintain safe conditions internally.
- Redwood operates two sites in San Francisco (Cole Hardware, Sports Basement) and is expanding in Northern Nevada; the bin includes fire-suppression media and opens only via infrared sensor.
- Collected batteries go to Redwood's facilities, where the company recovers over 95% of critical materials including lithium, cobalt and nickel.
