OpenAI releases Codex, a GPT model trained on code, in private beta via its API

OpenAI opened Codex, the model that translates plain-English instructions into working code, to businesses and developers through its API as a private beta. Codex already powered GitHub Copilot, launched with GitHub a month earlier, and handles more than a dozen programming languages.

• Translates natural language to code; proficient in over a dozen languages including Python, JavaScript, Go.
• Powers GitHub Copilot; launched with GitHub approximately one month before Codex announcement.
• Descendant of GPT-3, trained on natural language and billions of lines of public source code.
• Most capable in Python; also strong in JavaScript, Ruby, TypeScript, Shell and other languages.
