OpenAI launches Codex as a cloud coding agent in ChatGPT, running tasks in sandboxed containers
OpenAI launched Codex, a cloud software agent in ChatGPT research preview. It writes features, fixes bugs and proposes pull requests, with each task running in its own isolated sandbox preloaded with the user's code. It runs on codex-1 (o3 trained with RL on real coding tasks) and rolled out first to Pro, Enterprise and Business users.
- Cloud agent for writing features, debugging, proposing PRs; each in isolated sandbox.
- Powered by codex-1 (o3 fine-tuned on real software engineering).
- Sandbox preloaded with user code; can run tests, linters, type checkers iteratively.
- Initial access: Pro, Enterprise, Business; Plus users gained access by June 3.
