NRC completes draft environmental review for Fermi America's four-reactor Texas campus

Fermi America

The NRC has finished a draft environmental impact statement for Fermi America's plan to build and operate four AP1000 reactors at its Project Matador campus in Texas. The draft gives a preliminary recommendation to grant the combined operating license, pending a successful safety review. Public comments run from October 9 to November 23, and the NRC targets a final statement in December.

  • The draft is the first under an accelerated NEPA pilot, in which the applicant prepared the document under NRC supervision.
  • In August Fermi signed its first binding lease, with AI cloud provider TensorWave, for a data center with 222 MW of facility power, expandable to 650 MW.
  • Campus capacity figures have grown from 11 GW to about 17 GW, including 4.4 GW of nuclear in the original plan.
  • Fermi's CEO and CFO have stepped down; the company says it terminated the CEO for cause, and he has reportedly sued to block the removal.
