NRC puts Fermi's four-AP1000 plan into its fast-track environmental review pilot

The NRC opened public scoping for the environmental review of four AP1000 reactors at Project Matador, run under a pilot in which the applicant drafts the study under NRC supervision. The NRC expects the pilot to roughly halve its own review time. Fermi targets construction in 2027.

• First gigawatt-scale light-water reactor licence application accepted by the NRC since 2009.
• Pilot expected to cut NRC review time by about 50% and costs by about 30%.
• Public comments on scope were open until 20 April 2026.
• Hyundai E&C and Doosan Enerbility are named nuclear construction partners.
