MIT study with CarbonCure shows how CO2 mineralisation improves early concrete microstructure

CarbonCure TechnologiesCarbonCure system

MIT's Masic Lab and CarbonCure published a peer-reviewed study in the Journal of the American Ceramic Society using live Raman imaging of setting cement. Injected CO2 forms nano-sized calcium carbonate in the first hours that seeds a silica-gel scaffold, producing uniform microstructure; this enables about 13% higher early strength and lets producers cut cement by 4-6% on average.

  • CO2 injected during mixing forms nano-calcium carbonate (0-4 hrs) seeding silica-gel scaffold; normal hydration resumes 4-8 hrs, stabilising 8+ hrs.
  • Results: 13% higher early strength, cement reduction of 4-6% on average, permanent CO2 sequestration in concrete.
  • Already applied across more than 11 million concrete loads globally.
