Current obstacles

  • Little CO2 per loadEach cubic metre stores only a little CO2; real impact needs cement savings and very wide use.

Physics limits

  • Only a little CO2 can be addedToo much CO2 uses up the calcium the cement needs to harden and makes concrete set too fast, so useful doses are a fraction of a per cent of cement weight.
  • Most cement CO2 is released before mixingMaking a tonne of cement emits most of a tonne of CO2 in the kiln; mineralisation locks away only a small share, so savings come mainly from using less cement.

How it works

Inject

CO2 dosed into the mixer

Liquid CO2 from a tank is injected into fresh concrete as it mixes, in small doses set by the system's controller.

Mineralise

CO2 turns into limestone

The CO2 reacts with calcium from the wet cement to form nano-sized calcium carbonate, a solid that stays locked in the concrete.

Strength

Stronger early, less cement

Those tiny carbonate particles seed the cement's hardening, raising strength, so producers can use a few per cent less cement.

CO2 mineralization in concrete

CarbonCure (founded 2012, Nova Scotia) adds equipment to concrete plants that injects captured CO2 into fresh concrete. The CO2 turns into stone, locking it away and letting producers use a bit less cement.

  • Retrofit model: its equipment fits existing concrete plants, at hundreds of sites.
  • The CO2 forms tiny calcium carbonate particles that make concrete stronger early, so less cement is needed.
  • Yuliya Kravtsov became CEO in April 2026.
