Lightmatter sends 16 wavelengths in both directions over a single-mode fibre
Lightmatter demonstrated 16 wavelengths of light travelling bidirectionally over standard single-mode fibre at 800 Gbps total, versus the prior commercial limit of 2 wavelengths. The breakthrough uses a proprietary digital stabilization system and cuts the cabling required to link AI chips across data centers.
- 16 wavelengths bidirectional (400 Gbps each direction) over standard single-mode fibre, an 8x increase in wavelengths per fibre vs. prior commercial systems.
- Uses standard, cost-effective single-mode fibre instead of specialized polarization-maintaining fibre; proprietary closed-loop digital stabilization compensates for thermal drift.
- Cuts cabling density bottlenecks in AI data centers; addresses the power and space trade-offs of dense GPU clusters.
