China's first Guohe One (CAP1400) reactor connected to the grid at Shidaowan

The first of two Guohe One demonstration reactors at Shidaowan in Shandong was connected to the grid and began stepping up power before commercial operation. The design is an enlarged, Chinese-owned version of the Westinghouse AP1000, meant to be built in large numbers and exported.

  • Each unit is expected to make about 11.4 TWh a year.
  • Built by a joint venture that is 55% SPIC and 45% China Huaneng.
  • Construction began June 2019; the operating licence came in late July 2024.
  • Development started in 2008; the design passed an IAEA generic safety review in 2016.
