CATL launches Tener Sodium, a grid storage system built on sodium-ion cells
CATL launched Tener Sodium, a grid storage system rated at over 30 MWh built on sodium-ion cells with a 15,000-cycle lifespan. It retains 92% capacity at -20 degrees Celsius and is fully modular; deliveries in China started in September 2026 with global sales from June 2027.
- Tener Sodium is designed as a 25-30 year storage solution with 15,000 cycles at 25°C, rated for 1-, 2-, 4-, and 6-8 hour discharge configurations.
- Each module weighs 42 tons; the system includes millisecond-level fault detection and 150ms recovery, with nearly 2% better round-trip efficiency than prior designs.
- CATL shipped 1 GWh by end of 2026 and plans global deployment from June 2027, marking the beginning of large-scale sodium-ion storage commercialization.
