Cape Station reaches first power, the first utility-scale enhanced geothermal system to do so

Fervo EnergyCape Station

The first 33 MW unit of Fervo's Cape Station in Beaver County, Utah, synchronised with the grid and exported power on September 24, 2026. Fervo says it is the first utility-scale enhanced geothermal system to do so: instead of relying on natural hot springs, it drills horizontal wells into hot dry rock and fractures it so water can circulate and pick up heat.

  • Phase I is about 100 MW from three 33 MW units; the first is due for commercial operation by October 1, 2026, the other two by January 1, 2027.
  • Phase II adds about 400 MW and is targeted for 2028; Fervo has about 900 MW of contracted buyers, including a 396 MW agreement with Google.
  • The drilling methods come from oil and gas: several horizontal wells from one pad reach rock that conventional geothermal could not use.
  • Fervo's smaller Project Red pilot in Nevada has supplied electricity since 2023.
