Current obstacles

Heat inside very large cellsA bigger cell has less surface per unit of energy, so heat escapes more slowly. Keeping cell temperatures even is harder as cells grow.
Proving 25-year life in the fieldThe 1,300 Ah cell is rated for 25+ years, but kAh cells have only run since 2025; real-world ageing data will take years.

Physics limits

LFP's energy ceilingIron phosphate stores roughly 160-200 Wh per kg at cell level, below nickel chemistries, because of its lower voltage and capacity. Fine for a static battery, but it caps how much a container can hold.
Cost scales with hoursA battery's materials scale with energy stored, so an 8-hour system needs about twice the cells of a 4-hour one. Pumped hydro or thermal storage add hours more cheaply.
Ageing is chemicalEach cycle grows a film on the anode and slowly consumes lithium, so capacity fades over thousands of cycles; heat speeds it up.

Cell

One huge LFP cell

Lithium ions shuttle between a graphite anode and an iron-phosphate cathode. Making each cell very large raises the energy stored per cell to about 3.8 kWh.

Fewer parts

Less wiring and fewer joints

Fewer cells per container means fewer busbars, welds and monitoring channels, which cuts cost and the number of places a fault can start.

Container

Liquid-cooled ∞Power containers

Cells are packed into liquid-cooled containers that hold cells within a narrow temperature band; desert versions run from -30°C to 60°C.

Duration

Slow discharge for long hours

Cells are tuned to discharge over 4 to 8 hours rather than deliver bursts, matching the job of moving daytime solar into the evening and night.
