ZeroAvia flies a Dornier 228 with a hydrogen-electric engine on one wing
ZeroAvia flew its 19-seat Dornier 228 testbed from Cotswold Airport in Gloucestershire with a 600kW hydrogen-electric powertrain on the left wing while retaining a stock turboprop on the right for comparison. The 10-minute flight marked the first crewed flight of the largest aircraft to fly on hydrogen-electric power, part of the UK-backed HyFlyer II project toward commercial certification.
- 19-seat twin-engine testbed with hydrogen fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries on one wing
- Completed full circuit pattern at Cotswold Airport: taxi, takeoff, landing on January 19, 2023
- Hydrogen produced on-site by electrolyzer as part of the Hydrogen Airport Refuelling Ecosystem partnership
- Targets commercial routes using the technology by 2025 with additional test flights planned
