ZeroAvia flies a 19-seat Dornier 228 with one engine replaced by its hydrogen-electric powertrain

ZeroAviaZA600

ZeroAvia flew its Dornier 228 testbed from Cotswold Airport in England with the left turboprop swapped for its 600 kW hydrogen-electric powertrain and the right engine left standard. The roughly ten-minute flight covered taxi, take-off, a full circuit and landing, the largest aircraft flown on hydrogen-electric power at the time.

  • Two fuel cell stacks plus lithium-ion batteries for take-off power and redundancy.
  • Hydrogen tanks and fuel cells sat inside the cabin on the testbed; production versions mount them outside.
  • Plan at the time: certification submission in 2023 and deliveries from 2025, dates that later slipped.
