FAA issues final special conditions for ZeroAvia's 600 kW ZA601 electric motor
The FAA published 33 special conditions for ZeroAvia's ZA601 electric propulsion unit as a final rule on 18 March 2026, setting the extra requirements an electric aircraft motor must meet because existing engine rules were written for gas turbines. ZeroAvia called it a major step toward type certification.
- The ZA601 is the 600 kW motor at the core of the ZA600 powertrain.
- Rules cover power and torque limits, arc-fault protection on high-voltage wiring and safe behaviour if rotors keep turning after shutdown.
- The UK CAA granted ZeroAvia design organisation approval in late 2025.
