Walrus decentralized storage network launches on mainnet

Walrus moved from test network to production on 27 March 2025, letting apps store and fetch large files across more than 100 independent storage nodes, with payments and records kept on the Sui blockchain. Holders can stake the WAL token to decide which operators serve in the next period.

• Over 100 storage nodes at launch; the first storage period began on 25 March 2025.
• Storing data costs real WAL and SUI; a subsidy contract discounts storage for early users.
• Code is open source (Apache 2.0); an independent foundation now oversees the protocol.
