UK authorises orforglipron for weight management and type 2 diabetes

Eli LillyOrforglipron (Foundayo)

The UK medicines regulator (MHRA) authorised Lilly's orforglipron, sold as Foundayo, a once-daily GLP-1 pill for weight management and type 2 diabetes, making the UK the first country in Europe to do so. Unlike the existing oral GLP-1 (semaglutide pills), it has no food or water restrictions. It is not yet available on the NHS, which must wait for a NICE assessment.

  • Weight management: adults with BMI of 30 or more, or 27–30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside diet and exercise.
  • Diabetes: for adults whose blood sugar is not well controlled.
  • Dose climbs in steps of at least a month each, from 0.8 mg up to 17.2 mg.
  • Most common side effects are digestive: nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, indigestion, abdominal pain.
