TSMC's first Kumamoto fab begins mass production

TSMC confirmed that its first Kumamoto fab had started mass production, after Kumamoto Prefecture was notified on December 23. It makes 22/28 nm and 12/16 nm chips, including image sensors and car chips, with first orders expected from Sony and Denso.

• Capacity of 55,000 wafers a month.
• Fab 1 investment about ¥1.3T, with METI subsidies of up to ¥476B.
