Nature study: brain-spine interface lets man with paralysis walk naturally
ONWARD MedicalARC Therapy (ARC-EX / ARC-IM / ARC-BCI)
A fully implanted brain-spine interface enabling cortical recording and spinal cord stimulation allowed a man with tetraplegia to stand, walk, climb stairs and cross rough terrain with natural control. The system remained reliable for over a year at home and he regained some walking ability with it switched off.
- Fully implanted recording and stimulation system links cortex to spinal cord
- Participant could stand, walk, climb stairs, traverse complex terrain with natural control
- Reliability remained stable for over one year including independent home use
- Some walking function recovered even when interface was turned off
