IonQ researchers propose scheduled qLDPC error correction with up to 74x faster logical Clifford operations

IonQ

IonQ researchers published an arXiv paper describing a way to run logical operations across densely packed quantum error-correcting code blocks with fewer delays. Instead of sequential logical measurements, the method schedules joint measurements with a classical scheduler code and runs several commuting measurements at once using cat states.

  • The up-to-74x speedup applies to logical Clifford operations on a 22-logical-qubit code (Q102) in one random circuit; a smaller 6-qubit code shows 18.5x
  • Logical Toffoli gates speed up by up to 5x on Q102 and 4.2x on Q70
  • Generic joint measurement is roughly 2.4x to 3.0x faster than the Viterbi baseline, depending on the parameter L
  • The figures are best-case values for specific codes; the article does not say whether results come from hardware or simulation or name the Clifford baseline
