IonQQuantum networking

IonQ and the University of Cambridge opened the IonQ Quantum Innovation Centre on 15 October 2026, in the Ray Dolby Centre, the new home of the Cavendish Laboratory. The article calls it IonQ's first university-based centre of this kind; the partnership was first announced in March 2026.

  • IonQ will deploy a 256-qubit Superion quantum computer and an on-campus quantum network with two quantum networking data centres and three quantum networking nodes.
  • Nine inaugural projects cover quantum networking, sensing, hardware, and uses in chemistry, materials science, finance, engineering and medicine.
  • Innovate UK gives the National Quantum Computing Centre access and computing time over three years; the article gives no money figure for the centre.
  • The partnership also funds academic posts, postdoctoral fellows and PhD students, and strengthens the existing Cambridge-to-Bristol quantum network.
