Google DeepMind breaks up its AlphaFold team; most original authors reassigned
Google DeepMind has dissolved the dedicated AlphaFold team, according to reports citing the Financial Times. Most authors of the original AlphaFold papers were moved to other projects over the past year, and nearly a quarter of them have left the company.
- Researchers moved to Gemini-based projects, enzyme design, nuclear fusion and genomics; others went to Isomorphic Labs
- John Jumper announced in June 2026 that he was joining Anthropic, with two colleagues following him
- DeepMind confirmed the internal moves; Pushmeet Kohli said "the strategy has evolved" toward Gemini-powered tools for scientists
- Earlier this year, Jonas Adler moved to Google's internal Code Strike team, which works on AI coding
