Google DeepMind folds its AlphaFold team into other projects after John Jumper leaves for Anthropic

Google DeepMindAlphaFold

Google DeepMind has broken up its dedicated AlphaFold team, the Financial Times reported and DeepMind confirmed. Most of the original authors were moved over the past year to Gemini work, enzyme design, fusion, genomics or Isomorphic Labs, and nearly a quarter have left. Nobel laureate John Jumper announced a month earlier he was moving to Anthropic, with AlphaFold co-authors Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel.

  • AlphaFold predicted protein structures from sequence and earned Jumper and Demis Hassabis the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
  • Earlier in 2026 Jumper and Adler had moved to an internal Google coding team
  • Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's drug-discovery company, carries the AlphaFold work forward commercially
  • DeepMind said it remains "incredibly proud" of AlphaFold's legacy
