First Hualong One, Fuqing 5, enters commercial operation

Fuqing 5 in Fujian became the world's first Hualong One to enter commercial operation, after a 168-hour full-power run. First concrete was poured in May 2015 and the unit joined the grid in November 2020, making China the fourth country with its own Generation III reactor design.

• Construction began May 2015; grid connection 2 November 2020; commercial operation 30 January 2021.
• CNNC said it avoids about 3.1 million tonnes of coal burning a year.
• With it online CNNC ran 23 reactors totalling 21.4 GW.
• Sister unit Fuqing 6 and two Karachi units in Pakistan were next in line.
