First Connect-One participant uses Connexus to generate real-time speech
Paradromics said the first participant in its Connect-One trial, a Michigan woman in her 60s with motor neuron disease who was implanted in June 2026, used the Connexus implant to produce speech and text in real time. Her first chosen sentence, "Okay, I have a lot to say," was decoded with no errors, and she later used synthesised speech on a live phone call with her grandchildren. Researchers also saw distinct neural patterns for attempted and for imagined speech.
- Connexus is fully implanted, records individual neurons on hundreds of channels and sends data wirelessly through intact skin.
- Paradromics gave no words-per-minute or accuracy figures; the results are from one participant.
- Trial sites: UC Davis Health, Mass General Brigham and University of Michigan Health; the FDA cleared the study in November 2025.
