Celestia announces the Ginger upgrade: 6-second blocks and higher throughput

CelestiaCelestia mainnet

Celestia announced the Ginger upgrade (celestia-app v3), halving block time from 12 to 6 seconds and doubling throughput. It enables up to 1.33 MB/s with 8 MB blocks and lets rollups check data blob post history directly from block metadata. Rollout: testnets November 2024, mainnet December 2024.

  • Block time halved: 12 to 6 seconds; doubles immediate throughput; scales to 1.33 MB/s with 8 MB blocks.
  • BBR (Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip) congestion control replaces packet-loss detection; improves geographic distribution.
  • Rollups verify blob authors directly from block metadata; reduces data validation complexity.
  • Five major technical improvements: CIP-21 (authored blobs), CIP-24 (stable gas pricing), CIP-26 (faster blocks), CIP-27 (per-block limits), CIP-28 (2 MB tx cap).
