Current obstacles

Post-processing labour intensityParts must be cooled, unpacked from powder, and finished by hand. At small scales, this labour dominates unit cost.
Surface finish versus speed trade-offHigh throughput can produce rougher surfaces; customers must choose between speed and surface quality.

Physics limits

Powder bed size is finiteBuild platform dimensions set the largest part size. Multi-part nesting is required for anything larger, which reduces the advantage of speed.
Thermal energy dissipationThe nozzle array must cool between cycles. Nozzle density and refresh rate set the upper limit on throughput.

How it works

Thermal Arrays

30,000 nozzles print in parallel

Instead of a single nozzle, MJF uses 30,000 tiny heating elements to apply thermal energy across the entire powder bed at once, fusing the powder together.

Full-Bed Printing

Entire cross-section at one pass

The nozzle array covers the full width of the build platform, so each layer requires only a single pass instead of raster scanning.

Powder Recovery

Unused powder is cleaned and reused

Powder not fused in the part is recovered, sieved and recycled, reducing material waste and total cost per part.
