Current obstacles

Oracle concentrationMost assets rely on a small set of nodes; a coordinated attack on those nodes could move prices. Chainlink mitigates this with a large, varied operator set.
Data latencyData Streams add sub-second latency but only for high-volume assets. Rare or niche assets still face longer delays.

Physics limits

You cannot ask a blockchain to contact the internetA blockchain node cannot directly query a website or API; an external party must bring data in. This is fundamental to blockchain security.
Trust is concentrated in oracle operatorsIf the oracle operators agree to lie, on-chain contracts have no way to detect it. Only the incentive structure (stake, reputation, slashing) deters bad behavior.

How it works

Data Collection

Independent nodes fetch from multiple sources

Chainlink's network of independent nodes query exchanges, aggregators and APIs. No single node controls the price.

Consensus

Median price chosen and signed

Nodes report their prices, the median is calculated and then signed by multiple validators before posting to the blockchain.

On-chain Posting

Published in a reference contract

The price is stored in a smart contract. Any other contract can read it and use it for lending, trading or derivatives.

Incentives

LINK token rewards and slashing

Node operators stake LINK and earn fees from users. Bad behavior is penalized by slashing stake, so operators have skin in the game.
