The brief
- Amchepry: world's first approved iPSC-derived therapy (Japan, March 2026) for Parkinson's disease.
- Dopaminergic neural progenitor cells from donor iPSCs transplanted to the brain putamen.
- Phase I/II: seven patients (24 months); 4/6 improved without medication, 5/6 with medication.
Technical approach
Donor-derived iPSCs
Cells from donor blood, reprogrammed to iPSCs and differentiated into dopamine-producing neuronal progenitor cells.
Aggregated cell implants
Cells are formed into aggregates, transplanted via neurosurgery into the brain putamen.
No tumours, long-term survival
Brain imaging in the phase I/II trial showed transplanted cells survived, produced dopamine, did not form tumours, and sustained function for 24 months.
