The brief
- Samsung SDI is a major EV battery supplier developing its own solid-state cells and co-developing with BMW and Solid Power.
- Pilot S-Line began production in Suwon in 2023; commercial mass production targeted for Ulsan in H2 2027.
- Solid-state cells offer higher energy density, longer lifespan, and faster charging than liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion.
Technical approach
Proprietary silver-carbon anode with sulfide electrolyte
Samsung's design uses silver-carbon anode with sulfide electrolyte. Silver suppresses dendrites; sulfide enables ion transport.
Co-development and validation
Samsung manufactures cells using Solid Power's sulfide electrolyte parallel to its own technology. BMW validates packs. This allows parallel pathways.
6,500 m² production facility
S-Line (2023) tests sulfide and silver-carbon anode processes at 6,500 m². Pilot validates manufacturing before Ulsan.
