The brief
- Founded 2016, grows beef from cell samples in bioreactors; 99.999% cost reduction since 2013.
- Dec 2025: €15M funding, production cost suitable for commercial foodservice. Pursuing regulatory approval.
- EU, UK, Switzerland, Singapore regulatory submissions; hybrid products (fat + plant protein) first.
Technical approach
Animal cell samples
A small biopsy (sesame-seed sized) yields enough cells to grow thousands of burgers in bioreactors, without killing the animal.
Bioreactor fermentation
Cells grow in controlled bioreactors with growth media, oxygen, and pH control, mimicking the conditions inside an animal's body.
From €250k to commercial scale
2013 prototype: €250k. Now 99.999% cheaper via science breakthroughs and scaling. Approaching but not yet at parity with conventional beef.
