The brief
- Xeus wire carries current with zero resistance at cryogenic temperatures, enabling power transmission 10× more efficient than copper.
- Raised $147M: $23M Series A (Dec 2021), $40M Series B (Dec 2023–Nov 2024), $3M ARPA-E (2023), plus $80M DOE Project Arch grant (Oct 2024).
- North Carolina facility: $193.7M investment, 333 jobs, begins 2026 for fusion, grid and data centre applications.
Technical approach
Rare-earth YBCO coated on tape
YBCO thin film deposited via metal-organic chemical vapour deposition on metal tape enables high current density at cryogenic temperatures.
Lossless transmission
Superconductors carry current with zero resistance, so cables can transmit the same power with lower voltage and no heat loss, reducing grid costs and space.
Liquid nitrogen coolant
The wire operates at 77 K (liquid nitrogen temperature), which is far cheaper than helium cooling and simpler to implement in field deployments.
